Next Goal: 3 Guinness World Records

TRANSITION 1.1 REPORT (08/04 – 08/10)

HIGHLIGHTS: On the heels of my time trial victory at National Senior Games two weeks ago, it seemed natural to start thinking about my next cycling goal. I don’t have to defend my national championship for two years until 2027 in Tulsa, OK. In the meantime, why not take another shot at three inaugural Guinness world records in my age-group on a recumbent trike on an indoor velodrome. I reached out to Marshall, a multiple world record holder who works at the company that designed and built my trike. I had spoken to him more than a year ago about these record attempts, but, for a variety of reasons, we couldn’t get together.

This time, he and his crew were enthusiastic about the idea of using the Lexis Velodrome Mad Track Arena in Detroit, MI, for a dual competitor record attempt. He happened to know Dale, the director of the velodrome, and spoke to him last Thursday. Dale was enthusiastic about our attempt and recommended that we schedule it for the April/May 2026 time frame. That would be at the end of their busy winter season. They would promote it and get additional press coverage for us.

My coach agrees with an April/May 2026 record attempt. This gives us eight months to get ready. My initial goal would be a time of 3:39:18 for 100 kilometers (62 miles), 5:52:56 for 100 miles, and 102.00 miles for six hours – all inaugural records. I would only need to average 17 mph, well below my current race threshold. Marshall’s times and distance would be faster and farther since he is 10 years younger than me. Stay tuned.

All indoor cycling sessions were completed with my recumbent trike on a Kinetic by Kurt Road Machine smart trainer + Rouvy application. No strength workouts were completed.
