Cancelled Live Race; New Virtual Personal Best
RACE WEEK 26.3 REPORT (05/18 – 05/24)
HIGHLIGHTS: As I noted in last week’s training report, the weather was going to be the biggest factor in whether I raced the Maple Park Time Trial in-person today or not. I started watching the race day forecast daily as of a week ago. There was an increasing chance of rain each day. As of Friday, the cutoff for online registration, the forecast was a 75% chance of rain today. So, I decided to switch to a second virtual race effort instead. Not surprisingly, registration for this race was 35% lower than the last race. Did it rain? Nope. Partly cloudy skies, light wind, and temperature of 70 degrees: ideal race conditions.
Nevertheless, I improved my personal best time on the virtual Maple Park course by 31 seconds, from 0:29:51 to 0:29:20. Average speed increased from 18.6 mph to 18.9 mph. The other data points concerning heart rate and power were slightly higher than the first virtual race effort. On Tuesday, I will begin preparing for the third Maple Park Time Trial in five weeks.
All indoor cycling sessions were completed with my recumbent trike on a Kinetic by Kurt Road Machine smart trainer + Rouvy application. Two strength workouts with resistance bands were completed.

- Tuesday’s 3-Step Accelerations Intervals (3 x 3/2/1 minutes) workout was 15.99 miles in 1:08:00. Average speed was 15.4 mph; maximum speed was 21.1 mph. Average power was 91 watts; maximum power was 166 watts.
- Wednesday’s Recovery-Endurance Blend workout was 14.59 miles in 1:07:00. Average speed was 14.4 mph; maximum speed was 16.5 mph. Average power was 75 watts; maximum power was 103 watts. A 30-minute strength training with resistance bands workout was completed.
- Thursday’s Endurance Miles – “Coffee Shop Ride” workout was 15.85 miles in 1:10:00. Average speed was 13.6 mph; maximum speed was 16.6 mph. Average power was 66 watts; maximum power was 96 watts.
- Friday’s Aerobic Tempo/Sweet Spot Blend workout was 23.51 miles in 1:25:06. Average speed was 16.6 mph; maximum speed was 22.9 mph. Average power was 108 watts; maximum power was 273 watts. A 30-minute strength training with resistance bands workout was completed.
- Saturday’s Pre-Event Ride/Short Tempo & Speed Intervals workout was 13.72 miles in 1:03:00. Average speed was 14.4 mph; maximum speed was 19.8 mph. Average power was 79 watts; maximum power was 179 watts.
- Sunday’s 17-Minute Time Trial Warmup workout was 4.40 miles in 0:16:50. Average speed was 15.7 mph; maximum speed was 19.3 mph. Average power was 97 watts; maximum power was 199 watts.
- Sunday’s Virtual Maple Park Time Trial #2 race was 9.24 miles in 0:29:20. Average speed was 18.9 mph; maximum speed was 23.2 mph. Average power was 153 watts; maximum power was 334 watts.
