Recumbents Added to State Masters Games
PREPARATION 4.1 REPORT (06/29 – 07/05)
HIGHLIGHTS: I learned recently that my state masters games in September, a qualifier for next year’s National Senior Games, is including recumbents in the cycling events for the first time. I’ve raced this event in 2019 and 2020 on a standard bike, winning my age-group 5 kilometer (3.1 miles) and 10 kilometer (6.2 miles) races both years. My crash in 2021 ended my participation in the event since I was forced to switch to a recumbent trike.
In preparation, I’ve scheduled an aggressive training program with multiple virtual rehearsals on the 2.3 mile loop around a county park. Overall, the course is characterized as “rolling hills” with 89 feet of climbing (avg grade: 0.0%; max grade: 12.6%). Here is my rehearsal and race schedule:
- Virtual WI Masters Games 10 Kilometer (6.2 miles) Time Trial Rehearsal #1, Saturday, July 18, 2026
- Virtual WI Masters Games 5 Kilometer (3.1 miles) Time Trial Rehearsal #1, Sunday, July 19, 2026
- Virtual WI Masters Games 10 Kilometer (6.2 miles) Time Trial Rehearsal #2, Saturday, August 1, 2026
- Virtual WI Masters Games 5 Kilometer (3.1 miles) Time Trial Rehearsal #2, Sunday, August 2, 2026
- Virtual WI Masters Games 10 Kilometer (6.2 miles) Time Trial Rehearsal #3, Saturday, August 16, 2026
- Virtual WI Masters Games 5 Kilometer (3.1 miles) Time Trial Rehearsal #3, Sunday, August 17, 2026
