150,000th Cycling Mile Logged

SPECIALIZED 2.1 TRAINING REPORT (06/17 – 06/23)

HIGHLIGHTS: There were three highlights this week. One was a lifetime milestone, one was a freak accident, and the third was a major shift in training/racing for the balance of the season.

On Monday, at the 0:23:00 mark of my 70-minute workout, I decided to open my garage door slightly to reduce the 80+ degree ambient temperature. I stood up, turned to the right, and planted my right shoe on the smooth concrete floor. The cleat on my right shoe slipped out from under me and I fell heavily on my right knee, hip, and shoulder. Momentarily stunned, I was able to stand up and reach the garage door opener. I remounted my trike and finished the workout. The full extent of my injuries was a scrape below my right knee, a bruised hip, and a scrape along my right elbow.

On Tuesday, I moved my trike back into the basement. The fact that I’ve been stymied by the unsafe shoulders of the rural roads where the local time trial races take place, and the trike-unfriendly local bike trails, I saw nothing to be gained by training in the summer heat and humidity of my garage. I replaced my rear road tire with a trainer-specific tire that should aid in completing virtual versions of the live races remaining this season.

On Wednesday, at the 0:15:40 mark of my 90-minute workout, I logged my 150,000th mile since 2001 when I resumed cycling as an adult. It has taken 23 years, 2 months, and 23 days to achieve this milestone. At this rate, averaging 6,500 miles per year, I should reach 200,000 miles in 2031 at age 82 and 250,000 miles in 2039 at age 90.

My Chronic Training Load (CTL) increased to 58. This week’s training included seven workouts on the trike. All indoor cycling sessions were completed with my recumbent trike on a Kinetic by Kurt Road Machine smart trainer + Rouvy application.
