5th “Crash” Anniversary; Switched Race Effort
RACE WEEK 26.4 REPORT (06/22 – 06/28)
HIGHLIGHTS: I observed the 5th anniversary of the “crash” on Saturday. There have been no physical changes to my reconstructed spine nor any paralysis symptoms over the intervening years. My shoulder slouch and the resulting neck immobility is a daily irritation. I have successfully adapted to my recumbent trike, winning a national championship last July. I’ve also started increasing my weekly training miles to shed the body weight accumulated from the less demanding trike training workouts over the past several years.
This morning, I was scheduled to race the Virtual Maple Park, IL, time trial course for the third time. I was planning to set another personal best of over 19 mph average. However, I aborted the attempt after only a half mile. I just didn’t have any enthusiasm for the effort. I quickly switched to a comparable ROUVY course, the La Vuelta 2022, Stage 1, Utrecht, NL. Despite not exerting full effort, I still averaged 18.2 mph for a final time of 0:31:36 over 9.56 miles, roughly a quarter mile longer than Maple Park.
All indoor cycling sessions were completed with my recumbent trike on a Kinetic by Kurt Road Machine smart trainer + Rouvy application. Two strength workouts with resistance bands were completed.

- Monday was a rest day off the bike.
- Tuesday’s 3-Step Accelerations Intervals (3 x 3/2/1 minutes) workout was 14.98 miles in 0:58:30. Average speed was 15.4 mph; maximum speed was 18.6 mph. Average power was 90 watts; maximum power was 152 watts.
- Wednesday’s Recovery-Endurance Blend workout was 14.69 miles in 1:01:00. Average speed was 14.5 mph; maximum speed was 16.6 mph. Average power was 77 watts; maximum power was 111 watts. A 30-minute strength training with resistance bands workout was completed.
- Thursday’s Endurance Miles – “Coffee Shop Ride” workout was 20.42 miles in 1:30:00. Average speed was 13.6 mph; maximum speed was 18.7 mph. Average power was 67 watts; maximum power was 89 watts.
- Friday’s Endurance Miles – “Coffee Shop Ride” workout was 15.66 miles in 1:10:00. Average speed was 13.4 mph; maximum speed was 27.5 mph. Average power was 67 watts; maximum power was 78 watts. A 30-minute strength training with resistance bands workout was completed.
- Saturday’s Pre-Event Ride/Short Tempo & Speed Intervals workout was 13.90 miles in 0:57:00. Average speed was 14.6 mph; maximum speed was 20.5 mph. Average power was 82 watts; maximum power was 187 watts.
- Sunday’s 17-Minute Time Trial Warmup workout was 4.44 miles in 0:16:50. Average speed was 15.8 mph; maximum speed was 19.6 mph. Average power was 99 watts; maximum power was 222 watts.
- Sunday’s La Vuelta 2022 / Stage 1 / Utrecht, NL virtual race was 9.56 miles in 0:31:36. Average speed was 18.2 mph; maximum speed was 22.1 mph. Average power was 138 watts; maximum power was 238 watts.
