First AFib Treatment Scheduled

FOUNDATION 5.2 TRAINING REPORT (04/07 – 04/13)

HIGHLIGHTS: On Monday, I met with the Cardiac Care Team that will be treating my recently diagnosed Atrial Fibrillation (AFib). Just to be clear, AFib is a common heart rhythm disorder, not heart disease, such as coronary artery disease, heart failure, or arrhythmias. The echocardiogram conducted several weeks ago found absolutely no evidence of heart disease thanks to several decades of competitive endurance cycling.

There are two procedures widely used to restore a normal heart rhythm: Cardioversion and Ablation. I will undergo a Cardioversion on Monday, May 5. This is a noninvasive procedure where a controlled electrical shock is delivered to the heart, momentarily stopping its electrical activity, and allowing the normal rhythm to resume. This procedure has a 90% success rate. However, it is not a permanent cure, and arrhythmias can recur.

Meanwhile, I will continue my training for National Senior Games at the end of July. If the AFib reappears, I will schedule the Ablation procedure in the August-September timeframe.

All indoor cycling sessions were completed with my recumbent trike on a Kinetic by Kurt Road Machine smart trainer + Rouvy application. One of two strength workouts was completed this week.
