Heart Rhythm Back to Normal in 7 Minutes
FOUNDATION 6.2 TRAINING REPORT (05/05 – 05/011)
HIGHLIGHTS: On Monday, May 5, I underwent a Cardioversion, a 7-minute procedure used to reset a heart rhythm back to normal, particularly when treating atrial fibrillation (AFib). A controlled electric shock was delivered to my heart (see below). The heart rate trace shows my heart in AFib before the shock is administered. The post-shock heart rhythm returned to normal. Interestingly, my “normal” heart rhythm was diagnosed with a “1st degree AV block,” which is normal for athletes with “high vagal tone” or a low heart rate (less than 60 beats per minute).
I have to continue to take a beta-blocker, as a precaution to control abnormal heart rhythms, for the next 30 days before another EKG is conducted. Overall, this whole AFib episode was resolved in 47 days, from initial diagnosis on Thursday, March 20, to the Cardioversion procedure on Monday, May 5.
All indoor cycling sessions were completed with my recumbent trike on a Kinetic by Kurt Road Machine smart trainer + Rouvy application. Both strength workouts were cancelled due my strength coach’s honeymoon in Hawaii.
