Switching to Virtual Racing for Entire Season

PREPARATION 1.1 REPORT (03/09 – 03/15)

HIGHLIGHTS: After considering the drive time (and rising gas prices) for local races that are upwards of two hours away, I’ve decided to switch to virtual racing, despite the fact that I won’t win any medals or trophies as a result. I will be content with setting new personal records on the courses that I’ve raced live in the past on both my time trial bike and recumbent trike. I have virtual versions of most of the local courses and can race them through the Rouvy application on the live race days.

As for the Huntsman World Senior Games in October, I estimated that it will cost roughly $3,500 for the 8-day road trip, 2.5 days drive time each way and three days of competition. I have virtual versions of each of the three courses and can ride a virtual trike in a new application called TrainingPeaks Virtual that pulls route data from Google Earth to simulate actual terrain. I’ll race with it on the live race days and compare my virtual results with the registered competitors in my age-group and bike divisions.

All indoor cycling sessions were completed with my recumbent trike on a Kinetic by Kurt Road Machine smart trainer + Rouvy application. Two strength resistance and three standing abdominal workouts were completed.
