Abnormal Heart Rate Event on Friday

TRANSITION 1.2 REPORT (08/11 – 08/17)

HIGHLIGHTS: Since I was initially diagnosed with atrial fibrillation (A-Fib) back on March 20th and underwent a successful cardioversion procedure on May 5th, I have recorded four abnormal heart rate (HR) events. (My race HR threshold is 107 bpm.) The first and second were Sunday, June 22, when my HR peaked at an abnormal 141 bpm at 5:26 pm and again at 135 bpm at 9:36 pm. I felt nothing out-of-the-ordinary for either events.

The third event occurred on Thursday, July 31, while I was racing the 10 kilometer/6.2 mile time trial at National Senior Games. My smart watch must have vibrated the warning for an abnormal 133 bpm HR halfway into the race effort, but my concentration was on my breathing and pedaling. Again, I felt nothing out-of-the-ordinary.

The fourth event occurred this past Friday, August 15, while I was sitting at my computer. My smart watch started vibrating a warning at 2:18 pm for an abnormal 189 bpm HR. When I looked at my smart watch, it was actually displaying a 203 bpm HR. Again, I felt nothing out-of-the-ordinary.

Tomorrow, I am scheduled for my second A-Fib heart procedure, a cardiac ablation. A cardiac ablation uses heat or cold energy to create tiny scars in the heart. The scars block faulty heart signals and restore a typical heartbeat. Cardiac ablation is most often done using thin, flexible tubes called catheters that are inserted through a blood vessel. My procedure is scheduled over a four hour block of time.

I will be off the trike all next week, recovering from the cardiac ablation. Training will resume on Monday, August 25. I am 60 miles shy of 5,000 miles for the season with four weeks of training remaining.

All indoor cycling sessions were completed with my recumbent trike on a Kinetic by Kurt Road Machine smart trainer + Rouvy application. No strength workouts were completed.
