Awaiting Treatment for AFib

FOUNDATION 4.4 TRAINING REPORT (03/24 – 03/30)

HIGHLIGHTS: On Friday, I met with my Primary Care Doctor to discuss my Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) diagnosis and treatment. He was not surprised that I detected the AFib so quickly. He was more surprised that I had developed AFib at all, given my history of competitive endurance cycling. However, he conceded that my family history of heart issues for the male members was a good reason for continuing monitoring and an active lifestyle. He sent a referral to a cardiologist to evaluate me for a procedure called an “ablation.”

AFib ablation is a 3-6 hour minimally invasive procedure under local or general anesthesia. Thin catheters are inserted into a vein in my groin or neck and guided to the heart. The catheters map the electrical activity of the heart to identify the source of the irregular rhythm. The abnormal tissue is destroyed using radiofrequency energry (heat), cryoablation (cold), or pulsed field ablation (electrical pulses). I may stay in the hospital overnight for observation. I should be able to resume training and competing quickly afterwards.

All indoor cycling sessions were completed with my recumbent trike on a Kinetic by Kurt Road Machine smart trainer + Rouvy application. I completed both of the strength workouts this week.
