Over 300% Increase in Recumbent Competitors

PREPARATION 2.3 TRAINING REPORT (06/23 – 06/29)

HIGHLIGHTS: This week, National Senior Games posted the registration lists for all of the sports being competed next month in Des Moines, IA. The two-wheel recumbent competitors increased by 333%, from three in Pittsburgh two years ago to 10 in Des Moines. The three-wheel recumbent competitors increased by 360%, from five in Pittsburgh to 18 in Des Moines.

There are a total of three competitors in my age-group, including me. One of the competitors, Leamond S., from Georgia, is a complete unknown. A search of the Internet cycling/racing sites failed to find any mention of his name. The other competitor, Thomas N., from Florida, competed in Pittsburgh in both time trials but on a standard bike. He finished in 6th place in the 5 kilometer time trial and in 9th place in the 10 kilometer time trial. His average speed on a standard bike was comparable to my speed before my accident. There is a chance that his registration is a mistake and he intended to compete on a standard bike, rather than a three-wheel recumbent. There is also a good chance that neither of them will show up in Des Moines.

All indoor cycling sessions were completed with my recumbent trike on a Kinetic by Kurt Road Machine smart trainer + Rouvy application. Both strength workouts were completed.
